Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: 10 Rare Symptoms

If we have the symptoms of gastric reflux, although we can attribute them to other reasons, it is advisable to consult a specialist for proper treatment and relieve these ailments.

We speak of gastric reflux or gastroesophageal reflux when the contents of the stomach rise through the esophagus to the mouth  (food and stomach acids). Although it does not always reach the mouth, it causes a burning sensation or acidity.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease usually occurs when the body is in a reclined or lying position after eating a large or fatty meal. This is why it often occurs at night.

If you are affected by gastric reflux, we recommend that you slightly tilt the upper part of the headboard horizontally.

The feeling of acidity is the most common symptom. But there are other more rare symptoms that we present to you here.

1. Rare symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease: increased saliva

Excess salivation is a rare symptom that can appear after a meal.

You will then observe that the amount of saliva is greater than normal. It is a mechanism of the salivary glands which prepare themselves to digest the meal consumed as well as possible.

2. Pneumonia

The pneumonia is another uncommon symptom.

When acids travel through the esophagus, they may irritate the lungs.

3. Chest pain

Chest pain is more closely related to a heart attack than to reflux.

However, sometimes chest pain is due to acidity. Although it is not serious, it is better to go to the hospital.

4. Bitter taste in the mouth

The action of stomach acids can leave a bitter taste in the upper part of the throat as they move up through the esophagus. This flavor will stay for several hours. It then affects the tasting of food.

Some people associate this problem with poor oral hygiene or liver problems .

5. Snoring and breathing problems during sleep

Do you suffer from respiratory problems? Do they increase or worsen overnight? This may be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease which, on its way up from the stomach, causes a “wheezing” sound.

Acids can circulate in the respiratory tract and trigger irritation and infections. This causes episodes of coughing and choking.

6. Difficulties digesting food

When reflux is silent and has never been treated, stomach acids leave scars and burns in the esophagus.

This will affect the passage of food and you will start to experience bothersome sensations while eating. The most common is to feel “grazes”. The foods that present the most problems are acids and pungent.

To prevent this from becoming a problem that prevents you from following a varied diet, try to treat your gastroesophageal reflux disease quickly.

7. Gastric acidity

Another of the many symptoms of gastric reflux originates when stomach acids move up into the esophagus. The sensation can vary from person to person and can be difficult to identify at first.

Depending on its intensity, you may feel a slight discomfort up to severe pain in the chest.

8. Regurgitation

This phenomenon occurs when  stomach acid rises. It can even cause vomiting.

Frequent regurgitation can erode tooth enamel and cause certain dental problems.

9. Dyspepsia

Dyspepsia refers to  indigestion accompanied by discomfort in the upper part of the stomach. In some cases, it is painful and is almost always a symptom of gastric reflux.

Other symptoms may appear:

  • inflammation
  • heaviness
  • stomach ache
  • eructation

If you have any of these symptoms, it is best that you see a doctor to avoid complications (ulcer or cancer).

10. Dry cough

Gastric reflux can be seen as a lump in the throat. This sensation is very bothersome and will cause the urge to cough or clear your throat.

Do you have one or more of these symptoms? If this is the case, it is recommended to seek the help of a specialist to obtain an accurate diagnosis through specific examinations.
